Summary:
Xiyouji—Journey to the West—is one of China’s four classic novels. It tells the story of four pilgrims who, at the Emperor’s behest, embark on a long and perilous journey to the West to pay homage to the Buddha and retrieve sacred scriptures: the pious priest Tripitaka and his companions—Sun Wukong (the Monkey King), Bajie (the Boar), and the hideous-looking Sand Monk. These three had once incurred displeasure in Heaven and were banished to Earth to redeem themselves. While every child in its country of origin knows this story—rooted in beloved Chinese legends and myths—the novel has never before been fully translated into German.
This work of Chinese literature is immensely popular not only in China but also in neighboring countries; thanks to numerous adaptations, it is becoming increasingly well-known in the West and continues to shape the Chinese worldview. Currently, the successful Chinese producer Zhang Jizhong is planning a film trilogy in collaboration with James Cameron. Beyond film adaptations, the material has inspired countless books (including children's literature), comics, TV series, and video games. The famous manga series Dragon Ball is also based on it, and the opera Monkey: Journey to the West premiered in Manchester in 2007.
