Summary:
Wu Cheng'en, whose courtesy name was Ruzhong and who went by the pseudonym Sheyang Shanren, was a native of Shanyang County, Huai'an Prefecture (present-day Huai'an, Jiangsu Province). He lived during the mid-Ming Dynasty—roughly between 1500 and 1582 AD—and was born into a family that had declined from the status of minor civil officials to that of small-scale merchants. An avid reader, he frequently found himself the target of extortion by corrupt government underlings, which left him deeply dissatisfied with the realities of the society in which he lived.
