A sequel to Professional Mahjong Gokuu, Mahjong Gokuu Special features a story mode based on the classical Chinese novel Journey to the West. Featuring a comedic cartoon style, it puts players as the mythical figure Son Gokuu as he accompanies the Buddhist monk Sanzou on his pilgrimage to Tenjiku to spread the goodness of mahjong.

Mahjong Gokū Tenjiku is a riichi mahjong game developed and published by ChatNoir for the 3DO on August 10, 1994, for the Super Famicom on August 19, 1994, for the Sega Saturn on November 22, 1994, for the Sony PlayStation on December 3, 1994, for the PC-FX on March 24, 1995, and for NEC PC-98 computers on June 30, 1995. It also received a Windows PC version.
A sequel to the 1986 game Professional Mahjong Gokū, Mahjong Gokū Tenjiku features a campaign mode where players choose between one of several protagonists from the classical Chinese novel Journey to the West (Gokū, Gojō, Hakkai, and Sanzō, each representing a different “save slot”) as they make their way through their pilgrimage to Tenjiku while challenging various characters from the novel to matches to mahjong. Each group encountered has their own rule changes, and players rank up by winning against them.
The PS1 version later received an enhanced re-release on June 3, 1999, known as Mahjong Gokū Tenjiku 99. The game also received a sequel for the PlayStation 2 a year later, known as Mahjong Gokū Taisei.
