Soulcalibur is a 3D historical-fantasy weapon-based fighting game developed and released by Namco for arcades (using PS1 -based Namco System 12 hardware) on July 30, 1998. The sequel to the 1995 game Soul Edge , Soulcalibur features a new assortment of fighters and new gameplay mechanics (most notably the Eight-Way Run, which allows a higher freedom of movement). Set three years after the events of the game's predecessor (in which the corrupted pirate Cervantes was defeated and one of his dreaded "Soul Edge" blades was broken), the country of Europe is suffering from endless slaughters as the young knight Siegfried is transformed into the hungry knight "Nightmare" after wielding the hilt of the broken Soul Edge blade. The game was later ported to the Sega Dreamcast in 1999 (released on August 5 in Japan, on September 9 in North America as a launch title , and on December 1 in Europe). Along with a variety of new game modes and a new way of unlocking characters, this version is known for its improved visuals. It later received a HD-enhanced digitally-released port for the Xbox 360 (on July 2, 2008), for iOS devices (on January 19, 2012), and for Android devices (on November 20, 2013).

The third installment of the Soul series of fighting games, Soulcalibur II introduced numerous new characters and locales while tweaking the series's gameplay system. It was later ported to the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube in 2003 (March 27 in Japan, August 27 in North America, and September 26 in Europe), each version known for their own special guest character (with the PS2 version getting Heihachi from the Tekken series, the Xbox version getting Spawn from the comic book series of the same name, and the GC version getting Link from The Legend of Zelda series). The game was later enhanced and digitally re-released (as Soulcalibur II HD Online) for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on November 20, 2013. This version includes online multiplayer, enhanced graphics, and the inclusion of both Heihachi and Spawn.

Soulcalibur III is a 3D historical-fantasy weapon-based fighting game developed by Project Soul and published by Namco for the PlayStation 2 on October 25, 2005. An enhanced version, titled Soulcalibur III: Arcade Edition, was released for arcades (using PS2-based Namco System 246 hardware) on April 3, 2006. The fourth main entry in the Soul series of fighting games, Soulcalibur III features a full-fledged character creation system and numerous single-player game modes (including the story-based "Tales of Souls" mode, the strategy-RPG "Chronicles of the Sword" mode, and the endless "World Competition" mode). It is the last game in the series to be released in arcades (and, unlike previous entries, appeared in console first). Although Soulcalibur III does not contain a guest character in the main roster (which would be a common trend in the series starting with Soulcalibur II), players can unlock pieces to re-create KOS-MOS from the Xenosaga series in Create-A-Soul mode.

Soulcalibur IV is a 3D historical-fantasy fighting game developed by Project Soul and published by Namco Bandai for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on July 29, 2008. The fifth main installment of the Soul series, Soulcalibur IV brings the mainline series to seventh-generation consoles and introduces the series to both high-definition graphics and online multiplayer. It is also the first in the main series to not have an arcade release, and later received a handheld spin-off with Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny. The game includes several new game modes and features, including an updated version of Soulcalibur III's character creation mode (which now adds stats and special characteristics to the player's equipment), a new single-player mode (Tower of Lost Souls), and a new gameplay feature (the "Soul Gauge", which serves as a guard crush mechanic and can be used for instant-kill "Critical Finish" moves). Similar to the console versions of Soulcalibur II, the game features platform-exclusive guest characters, although both are from the same media franchise (the sci-fi series Star Wars, with Yoda for the 360 version and Darth Vader for the PS3 version) and were made available in the other version as DLC. It also received a promotional tie-in with Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, with the main protagonist being an unlockable character for both 360 and PS3 versions.

The sixth main entry in the Soul series, Soulcalibur V takes place seventeen years after the events of Soulcalibur IV and features the children of prominent series heroine Sophitia Alexandra as the main protagonists (Patroklos and Pyrrha). Along with descendants and students of some of the retired fighters from the series (such as Taki’s protege Natsu and Xianghua’s daughter Leixia), the game introduces new fighters (including fortune teller Viola and mysterious werewolf Z.W.E.I.). Like most of the previous games in the series, Soulcalibur V includes a non-canonical guest fighter. For this entry, the guest is Ezio Auditore da Firenze from the Assassin’s Creed series. Players can also unlock the moveset of Devil Jin from the Tekken series for use in the character creation system.
