Summary:
Wu Cheng'en, whose courtesy name was Ruzhong and who styled himself the "Hermit of Sheyang Mountain," was a native of Shanyang County, Huai'an Prefecture (present-day Huai'an, Jiangsu). He lived during the mid-Ming Dynasty—roughly between 1500 and 1582—and was born into a family that had declined from the status of minor civil officials to that of small-scale merchants. An avid reader, he was frequently subjected to extortion by petty government functionaries and harbored deep dissatisfaction with the realities of society.
