Date: June 1984

Platform: Nintendo Entertainment System / Arcade / Wii Shop

Developer: Capcom / Micronics

Publisher: Capcom / Romstar Incorporated

Genre: Action / Platformer

Theme: Fantasy

Franchises: SonSon

Adaptation: Addition

Summary:

Son Son is Capcom’s tribute to a Chinese legend called Xiyou Ji, meaning ‘Journey to the West’, considered to be one of the four classic pieces of Chinese literature. The main character in Xiyou Ji is Sun Wukong, or, when the words are pronounced as if they were Japanese kanji, Son Gokuu (hence the name Son Son).

All of Son Wukong’s companions besides Zhu Bajie (Pigsy) are snatched by a demon and it’s up to the two of them to chase after the demon and rescue them. The game auto-scrolls with multiple platform “tiers” and the player must switch between them and attack incoming enemies with their weapon. By switching tiers, the player can collect score items.

Son Son II (1989) ソンソンII

Date: January 27, 1989

Platform: TurboGrafx-16

Developer: Capcom

Publisher: Interchannel, Ltd.

Genre: Platformer

Theme: Fantasy

Franchises: SonSon

Also known as: Son Son 2

Adaptation: Addition

Summary:

Son Son 2 is the direct sequel to Son Son and features an interpretation of the Son Goku character from ancient Chinese novel Journey to the West. Unlike the first game, which played like a ground-based scrolling shoot-‘em-up with several floors the character could switch between, Son Son II plays much more like a traditional platformer, specifically Wonder Boy and even more overtly Capcom’s earlier arcade game Black Tiger. Son Son attacks with his extendable staff (based on Sun Wukong’s Ruyi Jingu Bang weapon) and can defeat enemies to earn coins, which can be spent on upgrades and health refills. The player also needs to find a key on each stage before they can reach the boss. The goal of the game is to rescue the other members of his party: Xuanzang (Tripitaka), Pigsy and Sandy. They are kidnapped during the opening cutscene by the final boss, who is depicted as a mysterious silhouette. Son Son II is also one of the earliest Capcom games to use Zenny, their trademark fictional currency.

Publisher: Capcom

Genre: Action / Compilation / Platformer / Shoot 'Em Up

Summary:

Capcom Arcade Cabinet is a downloadable front-end for a set of 17 Capcom arcade releases. The bulk of the games are from the pre-CPS era of Capcom's arcade development. They will be offered for sale on a bi-weekly basis, with an "all-in-one" download coming at the end of the run.

In addition to the regular arcade mode, players are also able to play a so-called "casual mode" which makes each game substantially easier. This is done by altering various gameplay factors. For instance, Ghost N Goblins casual mode makes item pots appear more frequently among other changes. Players can go in and edit the settings for casual mode as well.

New game options, such as the ability to shoot for longer distances in Commando, will be available. PS3 users will be able to upload clips to YouTube while Xbox 360 owners are limited to posting screenshots to Facebook. Replays are also supported.
