Summary:
Their original names were Wan Jiazong, Wan Jiaqi, Wan Jiajie and Wan Jiakun. Wan Laiming, Wan Guchan, Wan Chaochen and Wan Dihuan were their signatures when they created animated films. The Wan brothers were born in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, China, and are one of the founders of Chinese animation. Their father was a silk businessman who knew a little about art, and their mother was ingenious and could embroider and cut paper. The four brothers loved art since childhood and taught themselves to paint with the support of their parents. In 1919, the 18-year-old Wan Laiming was admitted to the Fine Arts Department of Shanghai Commercial Press; Wan Guchan graduated from the Western Painting Department of Shanghai Fine Arts College in 1921, and later taught at the school, Shanghai University, and Nanjing Fine Arts College; Wan Chaochen dropped out of Nanjing Fine Arts College in 1922 and the Decoration Department of Shanghai Oriental Art College in 1924. Later, the three brothers were also admitted to the Film Department of Commercial Press and worked together in the experiment and creation of Chinese animation.
